The museum in the village of Mount Victoria houses a unique collection of artefacts including those relating to the exploration and development of the road over the Blue Mountains, which was built by convicts in six months in 1813. The railway from Sydney came through in 1868 and the village developed from then on. Displays of equipment show how the early settlers were self reliant being blacksmiths, tool makers, sawyers etc. There are domestic details with pottery, crockery, musical instruments, silverware and gowns on display.

A unique girls boarding school in nearby Blackheath which was run on naval lines and patterned on the naval college of Osborne in the Isle of Wight on the south coast of England is featured in one room of the museum.

Volunteers from the local historical society run the museum which is open from 12 noon to 3pm every weekend, school holiday and public holiday except Christmas Day and Good Friday. Entry to the museum is $5 adult and $1child.
