Norfolk Island is best known for the magnificent Norfolk Island pine tree. Its fascinating history, from an abandoned Polynesian settlement through an era as a British colony, then a colonial prison has earned it the status of a World Heritage site, celebrating the world's finest collection of Georgian Colonial architecture. Since 1856 it has been the home of the descendants of the mutineers who took HMS Bounty in 1789,
However, there is so much more to Norfolk Island than its history, which is all about THEN. What better way to experience the NOW of this place than immersing yourself in the safe and beautiful natural sites, especially for BIRD WATCHING ? In the mountains, now mostly within the easily accessible Norfolk Island National Park, can be found a beautiful and fascinating array of almost 50 endemic plant species and the surviving 8 of the original 15 endemic forest birds. In fact the Norfolk Island group boasts two Important Bird Areas (IBAs), one made up of the main island, and the second declaration covering offshore Phillip Island, 7 km to the south, where 18 species of seabirds can be seen in their breeding season. Eight forest species and a number of the seabirds in Norfolk and Phillip islands cannot be seen anywhere else in the world, so it's a perfect place for a break to add those rarities to a birder's Life List. Our experienced and knowledgeable guides will share their love of the wonderful natural assets of the island group, from birds to plants, reptiles and ecological interactions in half day tours provided by Norfolk Island's only natural history specialists, with over 45 years experience in this unique ecosystem.
The seabirds are mostly returning to the islands from mid-October so the island's mild southern Spring and Summer provide a wonderful escape from the winter chills of the northern hemisphere. Fresh locally grown produce is adding up to a growing awareness of Norfolk's fine food; fish from our local pristine ocean and grass fed beef accompanied by the famed friendliness of the locals ... all this is only a 2 hour flight from Sydney into this tiny 5 x 8 km safe and peaceful Gem of the Pacific.
