Met Office Issues Yellow warning for North East England

In Effect From:
May 6th, 1:00 pm
In Effect Till:
May 6th, 9:00 pm
Current Status:
Warning No Longer In Effect

Severe storms and heavy rain could result in flooding and travel delays.

Thunderstorms and heavy downpours are expected to develop in some areas this afternoon and evening. While not all locations will experience these storms, those that do may see between 20 and 40 mm of rainfall within an hour or two.

If you are wondering what steps to take, consider assessing if your area is prone to flash flooding. If so, it would be wise to create a flood plan and have an emergency flood kit ready.

To minimize the chances of any disruptions, check road conditions before driving, or keep an eye on bus and train schedules to adjust your travel arrangements as needed.

Being prepared for power outages can make dealing with them easier. Prepare by gathering essential items like torches, batteries, a mobile phone charger, and other necessities.

If caught outside during a thunderstorm, seek shelter in a secure, enclosed area such as a car. Avoid taking cover under trees or other tall structures that could attract lightning strikes. If in a high-elevation area, move to lower ground.

Stay vigilant as weather warnings can change rapidly. When a warning is issued, the Met Office advises keeping abreast of local weather forecasts.

What To EXPECT

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
