Met Office Issues Yellow warning for North West England

In Effect From:
May 12th, 12:00 pm
In Effect Till:
May 12th, 10:00 pm
Current Status:
Warning No Longer In Effect

Rainstorms and thunderstorms may cause disruptions, particularly for travel, with isolated instances of property flooding possible.

Expect heavy showers and thunderstorms to develop in the southern part of the area on late Sunday morning and early Sunday afternoon, gradually moving northward and expanding into larger areas of rain before exiting. There is a potential for intense downpours in some locations, with up to 30 mm of rain in under an hour and possibly 40-50 mm over 2 to 3 hours, leading to the risk of surface water flooding. Localized hazards may include hail, frequent lightning strikes, and strong wind gusts.

To prepare for the possibility of flash flooding, assess the risk in your area and consider creating a flood plan along with an emergency flood kit. Secure moveable objects and temporary structures, such as bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, gazebos, sheds, and fences before the arrival of gusty winds. Stay informed about road conditions, public transport schedules, and consider adjusting travel plans if necessary.

Ensure you are ready for power outages by gathering essential items like torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and other necessities. If caught outside during a thunderstorm, seek shelter in a safe enclosed space like a car, and avoid standing near trees or other structures that may attract lightning strikes. Stay alert to changes in weather warnings, as the forecast can shift quickly. Stay updated with the latest weather information in your area according to the Met Office's recommendations.

What To EXPECT

  • There is a slight possibility of fast-flowing or deep floodwater posing a risk to life, especially in locations like road and railway underpasses.
  • There is a slight chance of rapid flooding of homes and businesses, resulting in damage to some structures from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail, or strong winds.
  • Spray and sudden flooding may cause challenging driving conditions and some road closures.
  • There is a small likelihood of power outages and potential loss of other services to certain homes and businesses.
  • In areas where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a possibility of train and bus services experiencing delays and cancellations.
