Met Office Issues Yellow warning for East Midlands

In Effect From:
May 12th, 1:00 pm
In Effect Till:
May 12th, 11:00 pm
Current Status:
Warning No Longer In Effect

Potential disruption expected in some areas due to heavy showers and thunderstorms, possibly causing travel delays and isolated property flooding.

Expect heavy showers and thunderstorms in the south and west of the area early Sunday afternoon, moving northward and intensifying into larger areas of heavy rain before clearing by late evening. Localized intense downpours may result in up to 30 mm of rain in less than an hour and possibly 50 mm over 2 to 3 hours, leading to surface water flooding. Additional hazards include large hail, frequent lightning strikes, and potentially strong wind gusts.

To prepare, assess your risk of flash flooding and consider developing a flood plan and emergency flood kit. Secure moveable objects and temporary structures before the arrival of gusty winds, such as bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, gazebos, sheds, and fences. Check road conditions and adjust travel plans accordingly to avoid delays. Have essential items ready for power cuts, including torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and other necessary supplies.

If caught outside during a thunderstorm, seek shelter in a safe enclosed area, avoiding trees or tall structures that may attract lightning strikes. If on elevated ground, move to lower ground. Stay informed of changing weather warnings by following updates from the Met Office.
