Met Office Issues Yellow warning for South West England

In Effect From:
May 18th, 1:00 pm
In Effect Till:
May 18th, 8:00 pm
Current Status:
Warning No Longer In Effect

Some areas may experience flooding and disruption due to slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms.

There is a likelihood of scattered slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms developing across parts of Wales and southwest England on Saturday afternoon. While some areas may see minimal rainfall, others could experience 20-30 mm of rain in an hour or two, with a small chance of isolated locations receiving 40-50 mm. The showers and thunderstorms are expected to diminish as Saturday evening progresses.

To prepare for potential flash flooding, assess your risk and create a flood plan along with an emergency flood kit. Safeguard your property and loved ones from harm by securing moveable objects and temporary structures like bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, gazebos, sheds, and fences before gusty winds arrive. Stay informed about road conditions and public transportation schedules to avoid potential delays.

To mitigate the impact of power outages, gather essential items such as torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and any necessary supplies. If caught outdoors during a thunderstorm, seek shelter in a safe enclosed space, like a car, and avoid standing near trees or structures that could attract lightning strikes. Stay vigilant for rapidly changing weather warnings, and stay updated on the forecast for your location as advised by the Met Office.

What To EXPECT

  • Spray and sudden flooding could result in challenging driving conditions and potential road closures
  • There is a slight possibility of rapid flooding of homes and businesses, leading to damage to structures from floodwater
  • Some communities may experience temporary isolation due to flooded roads
  • In areas affected by flooding or lightning strikes, there is a chance of disruptions and possible cancellations to train and bus services
