Met Office Issues Yellow warning for West Midlands

In Effect From:
May 21st, 12:00 pm
In Effect Till:
May 21st, 9:00 pm
Current Status:
Warning No Longer In Effect

Thunderstorms expected on Tuesday afternoon, may cause travel disruptions and surface flooding.

Expect heavy showers and thunderstorms to develop in the afternoon across parts of southwest England, Wales, and the West Midlands, tapering off in the evening. While some areas may be spared, those affected could see slow-moving, intense downpours with accumulations of 20-30 mm in an hour and possibly 40-50 mm in 2-3 hours in certain spots. Lightning and hail are also possible.

To prepare, assess your risk of flash flooding and create a flood plan and emergency kit if needed. Secure loose objects before strong winds hit, including bins, garden furniture, and tents. Check travel conditions if driving or taking public transport to avoid delays.

Be ready for power outages by gathering essentials like torches, batteries, and a mobile phone charger. If caught outside during a thunderstorm, seek shelter in a secure, enclosed area like a car and avoid tall structures or trees. Stay updated on weather warnings as they may change quickly.

What To EXPECT

  • Heavy rainfall could result in challenging driving conditions and potential road closures
  • If flooding or lightning strikes happen, there may be delays or even cancellations of train and bus services
  • Power cuts and disruptions to services for some homes and businesses are possible
  • There is a slight risk of rapid flooding, damage to buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail, or strong winds
