In Effect Till:
June 25th, 9:00 pm
Current Status:
Warning No Longer In Effect

Exceptional heat and high humidity causing widespread disruption and a risk to life.

An intense, record-threatening heatwave is set to peak across central and southern England and Wales on Wednesday and Thursday, with temperatures reaching at least 39°C and a chance of touching 40°C in the hottest spots. Unlike previous heatwaves, this one comes with high humidity and very warm nights that will make it hard for people to recover. It is advised to stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day (11am–3pm), drink plenty of water, and keep your home cool by closing curtains and blinds on sun-facing windows. Check on elderly relatives, neighbours and anyone with a health condition, and never leave children or pets in a parked car. Plan around possible travel disruption, take care near rivers, lakes and the sea, and learn the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Stay updated on weather warnings as they may change quickly.

What To EXPECT

  • Population-wide health effects, with illness and a danger to life possible even for fit, healthy people
  • Significant risk to life for vulnerable people, including the elderly and those with existing health conditions
  • Delays and cancellations to rail, bus and air travel as heat affects tracks and infrastructure
  • Difficult and dangerous driving conditions, with a heightened risk of vehicle breakdowns
  • Increased demand on power and water supplies, with possible outages and interruptions to services
  • A sharp rise in water-safety incidents as people head to rivers, lakes and the coast to cool off
  • Oppressive "tropical nights" with temperatures staying above 20°C, making it hard to sleep and recover
