Met Office Issues Yellow warning for East Midlands

In Effect From:
May 12th, 12:00 pm
In Effect Till:
May 12th, 10:00 pm
Current Status:
Warning No Longer In Effect

Potential disruption from heavy showers and thunderstorms, particularly for travel; isolated property flooding possible.

There is a likelihood of heavy showers and thunderstorms in the southern part of the area on late Sunday morning and early afternoon, gradually moving north and expanding into larger areas of rain before clearing. Some places may experience intense downpours, potentially causing up to 30 mm of rain in less than an hour and possibly 40-50 mm over a period of 2 to 3 hours, leading to surface water flooding. Additional localized hazards may include hail, frequent lightning strikes, and strong wind gusts.

To prepare for potential flash flooding, it is advised to consider if your location is at risk and create a flood plan along with an emergency flood kit. Secure moveable objects and temporary structures, such as bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, gazebos, sheds, and fences, before the arrival of gusty winds. Check road conditions before driving and adjust travel plans if necessary to avoid delays.

Prepare for power cuts by gathering essentials like torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and other necessary items in advance. Seek shelter in a safe enclosed area like a car if outdoors during a thunderstorm, avoiding trees or structures that could attract lightning strikes. Stay updated on weather warnings as they may change rapidly. The Met Office recommends keeping abreast of the weather forecast in your area.

What To EXPECT

  • There is a slight chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life, especially in places like road and railway underpasses.
  • There is a slight chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail, or strong winds.
  • Spray and sudden flooding could result in challenging driving conditions and some road closures.
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.
