Met Office Issues Yellow warning for East Midlands

In Effect From:
May 2nd, 12:00 pm
In Effect Till:
May 2nd, 11:59 pm
Current Status:
Warning No Longer In Effect

Potential travel disruptions and flooding threatened by thunderstorms forming this afternoon and evening.

While some areas will stay dry, thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and evening from the east and move slowly westwards or northwestwards. Where thunderstorms occur, heavy rain and frequent lightning are likely, with the potential for 25 to 30 mm of rain to fall in 1 or 2 hours in some places and possibly up to 50 mm in a few spots. Hail may also occur in certain areas.

To prepare for possible flash flooding, assess if your location is at risk and consider creating a flood plan and emergency flood kit. Check road conditions, bus and train timetables, and adjust your travel plans if needed to avoid delays.

In the event of power cuts, being prepared can make coping easier. Have torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and other essential items ready. If caught outside during a thunderstorm, seek shelter in a safe enclosed area like a car and avoid standing near trees or structures that could be struck by lightning. If on elevated ground, move to lower ground.

Weather warnings can change quickly, so stay updated on the forecast in your area when a warning is issued by the Met Office.
