While certain areas may stay relatively dry, heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to develop from mid-morning onwards. In the southern part of the warning zone, slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely, potentially accompanied by hail and lightning, before gradually easing off later on Tuesday evening. On the other hand, the northern areas within the warning zone may experience early showers evolving into persistent heavy and thundery rain which may extend into Wednesday (covered by a separate warning).
Within the warning area, it is possible to see 20-30mm of rain in an hour (with the highest amounts more likely to the south of London), and some areas could receive 40-50mm in a 2-3 hour period.
Here are some recommended actions to take:
- Assess if your location is at risk of flash flooding and consider creating a flood plan and emergency flood kit.
- Secure moveable objects and temporary structures, such as bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, gazebos, sheds, and fences, before gusty winds hit.
- Check road conditions, bus and train schedules, and adjust travel plans accordingly to avoid delays.
- Prepare for potential power outages by gathering necessary items like torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and other essentials.
- If caught outside during a thunderstorm, seek shelter in a safe enclosed space (like a car) and avoid trees or structures that could attract lightning. Move to lower ground if you are in an elevated area.
- Stay updated on weather warnings as they may change rapidly. The Met Office recommends staying informed about the forecast in your area.
