Met Office Issues Yellow warning for London & South East England

In Effect From:
May 2nd, 12:00 pm
In Effect Till:
May 2nd, 11:59 pm
Current Status:
Warning No Longer In Effect

Possible travel disruption and flooding due to thunderstorms developing this afternoon and evening.

Some areas may remain dry, but thunderstorms are expected to develop later today and move slowly from east to west or northwest. These storms could bring heavy rain, lightning, and the possibility of hail, with up to 30 mm of rain falling in a short period in some places, and possibly even up to 50 mm in isolated spots. To prepare for potential flash flooding, consider creating a flood plan and emergency kit. Check road, bus, and train conditions to avoid delays and be ready for power outages by gathering essential items like torches, batteries, and a mobile phone power pack. If caught outside during a thunderstorm, seek shelter in a safe enclosed space such as a car, avoiding trees and elevated areas. Stay updated on weather warnings as they may change quickly, according to the Met Office recommendations.

What To EXPECT

  • Difficult driving conditions and some road closures could result from spray and sudden flooding
  • There is a possibility that flooded roads could lead to some communities becoming cut off
  • Train and bus services may experience delays and some cancellations in areas where flooding or lightning strikes occur
  • Power cuts and potential loss of services to certain homes and businesses could occur to a slight extent
  • Damage to buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail, or strong winds could quickly flood homes and businesses to a small extent
