Met Office Issues Yellow warning for North East England

In Effect From:
May 26th, 12:00 pm
In Effect Till:
May 26th, 8:00 pm
Current Status:
Warning No Longer In Effect

Potential flooding and disruption in areas due to slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms.

Expect slow-moving showers and thunderstorms to develop on Sunday afternoon, with varying rainfall accumulations across the warning area. Organised showers may result in 20-30 mm of rain falling in an hour, along with frequent lightning and hail, particularly in the east.

To prepare, assess the risk of flash flooding in your area and create a flood plan and emergency kit. Secure moveable objects and structures before gusty winds arrive, including bins, furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds, and fences.

Check road conditions and transport schedules, and prepare for potential power cuts by gathering essentials like torches, batteries, and a mobile phone power pack.

If outside during a thunderstorm, seek shelter in a safe enclosed area like a car, avoiding trees and other structures that may attract lightning strikes. Stay informed of weather warnings that may change quickly by keeping up-to-date with the forecast from the Met Office.

What To EXPECT

  • There is a slight possibility of homes and businesses being flooded rapidly, resulting in damage to some buildings from floodwater and lightning strikes
  • If flooding or lightning strikes happen, there is a chance of delays and potential cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and sudden flooding may cause challenging driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a slight possibility that certain communities may become temporarily isolated due to flooded roads
  • There is a small likelihood of power outages occurring, which could result in the loss of services to some homes and businesses
