Met Office Issues Yellow warning for South West England

In Effect From:
May 12th, 1:00 pm
In Effect Till:
May 12th, 11:00 pm
Current Status:
Warning No Longer In Effect

Potential disruption in travel and isolated property flooding possible due to heavy showers and thunderstorms.

There is a high chance of heavy showers and thunderstorms in the south and west of the area on Sunday afternoon, spreading northward and increasing in intensity before clearing in the evening. Some areas may experience intense downpours, leading to possible surface water flooding with up to 30mm of rain in less than an hour and 50mm over 2-3 hours. Large hail, frequent lightning, and strong wind gusts could also pose localized risks.

To prepare, assess the risk of flash flooding in your location and create a flood plan and emergency kit if needed. Secure moveable objects and temporary structures before gusty winds arrive, such as bins, furniture, trampolines, tents, or sheds. Check road conditions and transportation schedules for any necessary changes to travel plans.

It is advisable to gather essential items to cope with power cuts in advance, such as torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and other necessities. When outside during a thunderstorm, seek shelter in a safe enclosed space like a car while avoiding trees or other structures that may attract lightning strikes. Stay updated on weather warnings, as they can change quickly, by following the Met Office forecast for your area.
