Met Office Issues Yellow warning for West Midlands

In Effect From:
May 12th, 12:00 pm
In Effect Till:
May 12th, 10:00 pm
Current Status:
Warning No Longer In Effect

Severe storms may cause travel disruptions and isolated property flooding.

There is a high chance of heavy showers and thunderstorms in the southern part of the area on late Sunday morning and early Sunday afternoon. The storms are expected to move northward, increasing in size before eventually clearing the area. Some areas may experience intense downpours, potentially leading to surface water flooding with 30 mm of rain in less than an hour, and up to 40-50 mm over 2 to 3 hours. Hail, frequent lightning strikes, and strong wind gusts are additional hazards to be aware of.

To prepare for potential flash flooding, assess the risk to your location and consider creating a flood plan and an emergency flood kit. Secure moveable objects and temporary structures, such as bins, garden furniture, and tents, before the arrival of gusty winds. Stay updated on road conditions and public transportation schedules to avoid travel delays.

In case of power outages, gather necessary items like torches, batteries, and a mobile phone power pack to cope with any disruptions. If caught outside during a thunderstorm, seek shelter in a safe enclosed area like a car, avoiding trees or structures that may attract lightning strikes. Be vigilant of rapidly changing weather warnings by staying informed with the local forecast from the Met Office.

What To EXPECT

  • There is a slight chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing a risk to life, particularly in areas such as road and railway underpasses.
  • There is a slight chance of rapid flooding of homes and businesses, with potential damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail, or strong winds.
  • Spray and sudden flooding could result in challenging driving conditions and some road closures.
  • There is a slight chance of power cuts and potential loss of other services to some homes and businesses.
  • In areas affected by flooding or lightning strikes, there is a possibility of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.
