Met Office Issues Updated Yellow Weather Warning for Wales and West Midlands

11th January 2023
Warning No Longer In Effect

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning between 21:00 (UTC) on Wed 11 Jan 2023 and 17:00 (UTC) on Thu 12 Jan 2023

A spell of persistent heavy rain is expected to affect parts of Wales and Southwest England through Wednesday night and Thursday. The rain is expected to be particularly heavy across South Wales and higher parts of Southwest England, with rainfall accumulations through the period ranging from 15-30 mm, but potentially reaching up to 70-90 mm over higher ground.

The rain is likely to cause power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses, as well as flooding and damage to some buildings. Fast flowing or deep floodwater is also possible, and this, in addition to strong winds, could lead to delays or cancellations to train and bus services, as well as difficult driving conditions and some road closures. Some communities may also be cut off by flooded roads.

In addition to the heavy rain, strong west or southwest winds are also expected, with gusts reaching 45 mph inland and 60 mph along some coasts and across high ground, peaking most likely on Wednesday night.

Regions and local authorities affected:

South West England: Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, North Somerset, Plymouth, Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Torbay, Wiltshire

Wales: Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Torfaen, Vale of Glamorgan

West Midlands: Herefordshire, Shropshire

Reason for update: Warning updated to increase impact level, and adjust highest rainfall totals

The Met Office advises people to stay aware of their local weather conditions, and to take appropriate action if necessary to protect themselves, their property, and their community.
