Krka National Park lies within Šibenik-Knin County, and covers a total area of 109 km² of the loveliest sections of the Krka River, and the lower course of the Čikola River. The travertine waterfalls of the Krka River are the fundamental phenomenon of this river. Due to its exceptional natural value, the Krka National Park was proclaimed in 1985. On its territory there are many cultural and historical monuments such as archaeological sites (Oziđana cave, Burnum), medieval fortresses (Ključica, Nečven, Trošenj, Kamičak, Bogočin), ethnography (mills), monuments of religious heritage (Visovac Island, Krka Monastery) and monuments of industrial architecture (Krka HE).
Krka National Park is open for visitors year round, and can be toured by water, by road or by foot on many hiking trails.
The most frequently visited areas of Krka National Park are: Skradinski buk, one of Croatia's best known natural features and one of the most unusual and beautiful landscapes in Krka NP; Visovac Island, with the Franciscan monastery of Our Lady of Mercy and the Church of Our Lady of Mercy is one of the most important natural and cultural values of the Republic of Croatia; Roški waterfall, exceptionally interesting due to its cascades which the locals called the „necklaces“ due to the lush vegetation; Krka Monastery (Holy Archangel), the spiritual centre of the Orthodox faith that was built on the foundation of an older, heremit monastery; and archaeological locality Burnum, the only military amphitheatre in Croatia opet for visitors.
Visitors are provided with additional viewing platforms which offer stunning views of the falls and the river, exceptional vegetation, geomorphological forms of rocks and numerous educational hiking trails.
