The Berlin Botanic Garden is one of the top three botanic gardens in the world and a designated Heritage Garden. This plant paradise of world importance with a history of over 330 years is an oasis in the hustle and bustle of the metropolis. The Botanic Garden Berlin-Dahlem invites visitors to inform themselves about the fascinating world of plants. Today it comprises an area of 126 acres (43 hectares) and hence is one of the world’s largest and most important gardens. About 20,000 different species of plants are cultivated here in a very pleasant environment and provide the opportunity to recuperate the beauties of nature, and to learn more about the multifarious world of plants.
The magnificent greenhouse complex next to the Italian Garden consists of 15 houses open to the public and offers the possibility to travel through tropical and subtropical vegetation. The more than 100 year old main tropical greenhouse has a length of 60 m and height of 23 m. It is one of the largest in the world being a Heritage due to its unique historical architecture. On your journey through our other tropical greenhouses, you will encounter the rich Berlin collections of begonias, orchids, bromeliads, tropical ferns and important useful plants of the tropics. In the cooler greenhouses you will find camellias, azalea species, plants from South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and insectivorous plants. Succulent plants like species of euphorbia, aloe, cactus and agave represent the desert regions. Enjoy the Mediterranean charm of our renaissance styled Italian Garden.
The plant geography section occupies nearly a third of the entire garden's surface area. There is nothing comparable in the world today to the twelve rock gardens featuring plants from different mountain regions, forests, swamps, heath, dunes and steppe vegetation. Take the opportunity to tramp from Europe to Asia crossing the Alps and the Himalayas. Continue your journey through the peaceful Japanese section to the North American flower-rich prairie sections, mountains and forests, bordering a picturesque pond.In the arboretum and taxonomy section you can gain insight into the relationship among woody and herbaceous plants. Our garden with medicinal and poisonous plants is arranged in the shape of the human body. You will find about 230 medicinal plants, along with their names and information on some chemical compounds and their pharmacological importance.
The Botanical Museum is absolutely unique in Central Europe. Collections of ancient Egyptian burial objects and original walking stick of Alexander von Humboldt, information about crop plants and psychoactive plants are among the highlights of the museum. Visitors can combine their visit to the gardens and Museum for a well-rounded day out, museums entrance is included in the garden ticket.
