The Gardens of the World showcase globally unique examples of foreign horticultural art. The foundation for this extraordinary garden ensemble came in 2000 with the creation of the Chinese Garden. This was followed in 2003 by the Japanese Garden – designed by the Zen priest Shunmyo Masuno – and the Balinese Garden. The oriental “Garden of the Four Currents” (2005) with the “Hall of Receptions” represents the Islamic garden tradition of various countries. In 2006 came the Korean Garden. Since 2007, visitors can experience two different types of European horticultural art – a hedged maze garden and a labyrinth. 2008 saw the reopening of the Karl Foerster Perennial Garden and the addition of the Italian Renaissance Garden. The Christian Garden, which draws on the archetype of the cloister and translates it into a modern formal and symbolic language, has been providing a truly special garden experience since April 2011. The opening of an English Cottage Garden is planned for 2014, and in 2017 the Gardens of the World will host the IGA Berlin 2017.
