Kylemore Abbey and Victorian Walled Garden is the number one visitor attraction in Ireland West. Situated in a 1,000 acre woodland estate Kylemore Abbey offers the perfect day out for all the family. The Abbey itself was built in 1868 by the wealthy English businessman 'Mitchell Henry' as a gift to his beloved wife 'Margaret'. Referred to as the "estate of all the innovations of the Victorian age" Kylemore was hoped by Henry to be a showcase of all that Ireland could be. From its Italian inspired interiors to its magnificent gardens with their 21 heated glasshouses Kylemore was a paradise in one of the most rural and unspoilt areas of Europe. Sadly tragedy befell Henry and his family and the estate was eventually sold to the flamboyant Duke of Manchester and his American heiress wife Helena Zimmerman. The Manchesters were in residence until 1913 and eventually in 1920 the Benedictine nuns of Ypres Belgium settled here at Kylemore where they are still thriving today.
Visitors can explore the restored rooms of the Abbey and find out about its intriguing past life including the 80 years or so that it became home to young ladies from all over the world in the famous Kylemore Abbey Girls school. Take in a chorale performance in the majestic neo Gothic Church, explore our wonderful tree lined avenues that lead you to the Mausoleum and the Giants Wishing Stone. No visit to Kylemore is complete without seeing our 6 and a half acre Walled Gardens in all their splendour. Drop into the restored Head Gardeners house and the under gardeners Bothy House to see what life was like for the people who ran the estate over 100 years ago.
