Brú na Bóinne is the name given to a complex of ancient monuments lying about 8 km inland from Drogheda on the east coast of Ireland. Brú na Bóinne -the palace or mansion of the Boyne- is the Irish name given to one of the world’s most important archaeological landscapes. This area, between the towns of Slane and Drogheda, is where the River Boyne meanders into a dramatic loop or bend and is dominated by the spectacular, 5000 year old prehistoric passage tombs of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth. Passage tombs are found in a few other areas of Europe, but it is in Ireland that they found their most inspired expression.

In recognition of the international importance of these monuments, and the many other archaeological features in the area, UNESCO has designated the Brú na Bóinne area a World Heritage Site.
