Rathcroghan royal complex has a huge concentration of sites – over 240 archaeological sites, with over 60 of these regarded as national monuments. All of this is contained in a 6.5 kilometre sq. area, ensuring that there is a wealth of Mythology, Archaeology, History and Literature just waiting for you to discover.
From the legendary Oweynagat (Cave of the Cats), which was described as the Hellsmouth of Ireland by fearful Christian scribes, to the majestic and enigmatic Rathcroghan Mound; which in the Iron Age was impressively topped by wooden ramparts and ceremonial henges, and whose secret heart remains an untouched mystery – allow yourself to be embraced by Ireland’s sacred past.
Rathcroghan Royal Complex has been nominated to the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status, which would elevate it to its rightful place of importance alongside Newgrange, and Skellig Michael.
Coupled with this, explore Rathcroghan and medieval Tulsk through our brand NEW interpretive exhibition rooms, where you will walk into the stories, archaeology and history of Connacht's royal capital. Here you will be able to hear and see the epic tale, Táin Bó Cuailnge, up close.
As well as that, you will be able to learn how our Iron Age and medieval ancestors lived, by seeing where they lived, what they ate, and what they believed in. So come to Rathcroghan, and embrace Ireland’s mysterious Iron Age!
