In Amsterdam’s Golden Age the famous architect Philip Vingboons built two magnificent merchants' houses on the Herengracht. From 1975 onwards, the Biblical Museum was accomodated within these houses. The collection is now kept in the basement and on the upper floors, and tells the tale of the fascinating story of the bible’s creation and the influence it has had on Dutch society over many centuries.
This meeting place of bible, art and culture will take you on a captivating journey through the history of one of the oldest and most well read books in the world. Archaeological discoveries, objects from ancient Egypt, models of the Temple of Solomon and Herod that are centuries old, and religious artefacts from the Jewish and Christian tradition will help you get to know the stories from the bible.
The historic buildings in which the museum is located were built in the 17th century in the classic Dutch style. The houses were commissioned by the wealthy merchant Jacob Cromhout, who was also the first resident. A twisted piece of wood carved in the wall recalls his name (“Cromhout” = “twisted wood”).
The stunning enclosed garden of the museum forms an oasis of calm in the busy heart of Amsterdam. It is an historic, symmetric garden full of trees, plants and water features. The layout also offers a great deal of symbolism. The garden is directly bordered by the museum café Hof van Heden, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee with a piece of cake or a delicious lunch.
