Centuries long tradition of hand-knitting in Western Serbia has been the basic concept for Sirogojno Style since its origins in 1960s. These garments represent an authentic fusion of traditional Serbian manufacturing techniques and high-quality natural materials with contemporary styles and designs. The production includes hundreds of experienced knitters who work at their homes in the mountain village named Sirogojno in Western Serbia.This unique project of associating the knitters has contributed significantly to the development of the Zlatibor region, economic independence of women in patriarchal families as well as cultural education of the villagers through numerous concerts, literary evenings, artistic colonies and fashion shows which have been organized in Sirogojno since 1960s.
The Knitters´ Museum has been dedicated to the Sirogojno sweater and its development from traditional clothing of the Zlatibor region to a fashionable trade mark of high quality and authentic design. Unique hand-knitting techniques and the authentic designs of Sirogojno Style garments have been honored and adored by fashion professionals and the public for over 50 years. Nancy Regan, Raisa Gorbachov and Queen Elisabeth II are few of many who own Sirogojno Style garments as a part their personal wardrobe. Many national and international awards have been won over the years, as well as personal praises from fashion icons like Missoni and Pierre Cardin.
The Knitters´ Museum has been guarding the memory of the beginnings of this unique project and has soon after the opening in July 2008 become an important part of the tourist offer of Sirogojno and the whole Zlatibor region. Part of the exhibition are articles from Yugoslav and foreign fashion magazines honoring Zlatibor knitters, awards for the contribution to European Haute Couture as well as numerous prizes recognizing the work of the designer Dobrila Smiljanic. There are also letters and photographs of famous women who possessed at least one piece of clothing from the collection of Zlatibor knitters.
For larger groups (more than 10 people) fashion shows and knitting workshops are organized. Visits to the selling exhibition of the hand-knitted woolen garments are also possible.
