In 1998, with the inauguration of Hammam Al Ándalus Granada, the fi rst Arab baths in Spain were opened, fi ve centuries after being closed by the Catholic Monarchs. This building, which dates from the 13th century, stands at the foot of the Alhambra, behind the Iglesia de Santa Ana, a church built over an old mosque. Both its location and the signs of water found during archeological studies lead to the conclusion that the original Hammam was in the very same location. Mosaics featuring geometric designs, columns carved in Arabesque motifs, arches and vaults dotted with skylights, all of which come together to complete the recreation of what used to be the epicentre of Andalusí society.
Hammam Al Ándalus recovers the essence of a civilization that revolved around water, the most vital element in the life and spirituality of those who came before us. The Hammam, originally a place where people gathered together, now represents a break from our daily lives, a place where we can get away, enjoy the beauty of Andalusí architecture, the aromas and flavours of nature; a space in which to renew our bodies and minds.
With quiet Andalusí music in the background, the warmth and soft lighting of the surroundings envelop you as you follow the Hammam Al Ándalus circuit through a series of thermal contrasts: absolute relaxation in the hot pool and stimulation in the cold one. After this, we move to the warm pool, always the largest, since, according to the customs of time—gone-by, this is the spot in the Hammam where conversations about politics, business or religion went on for hours. After the steam room your skin is finally ready for the massage, which is accompanied by oil scented with rose, lavender, red amber or pomegranate flower.
