Cotton was first spun on this site in 1776 when Jedidiah Strutt first set up his factory, powered by the River Derwent. The original mill was destroyed by fire in 1803. It was replaced by the present iron-framed, fire-proof, multi-storey structure that could adjust to the shaking and rumbling of more than a hundred spinning frames.

Cotton thread produced at Strutt's mills in Belper and Milford was used for weaving and making cloth world-wide. The Strutt fortune however was founded on the hosiery industry when the Georgian fashion was for gentlemen to show a well-turned leg in a fine stocking.

Our displays include original spinning and knitting machinery, locally 'chevened' stockings as well as stories of the Strutt family and life for the many hundreds of mill workers. Here you can find a wealth of local and tourist information including details of walks and cycling as well as accommodation. The museum has a small gift shop and serves a selection of hot and cold drinks available during opening hours. Wednesday to Sunday 11am to 4pm. Tours and Educational Visits welcome via prior booking.
