Cowdray is one of Southern England's most important early Tudor courtier's houses, visited by King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I. Partially destroyed by fire in 1793, its magnificent ruins are set in the stunning landscape of Cowdray Park, in the heart of the South Downs National Park.
Painted by both Turner and Constable in the 19th Century, Cowdray became fashionable as a romantic ruin. Mentioned in William Cobbett's 'Rural Rides' in 1830, it was a popular Victorian tourist attraction, but had become dangerous by the end of the 20th Century. Accessible again after a major conservation project, Cowdray can now tell the stories of its owners and the daily life of a noble household in Tudor times.
Cowdray is open on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays from 23rd May to 6th September 2015, from 12pm to 4pm with last entries at 3pm. Groups of 20 or more can visit at any time by prior arrangement.
