Over a thousand years ago a holy man named Fintan Munn came from Ireland to Kilmun and started one of the first Christain communities in the west of Scotland. This site predates that of Rosslyn Chapel by a few years. This cell or chapel of Munn gave Kilmun its name.
Today the church and mausoleum, the burial place of the Campbells of Argyll until 1949, have been extensively restored and a Visitors Centre is situated inside the entrance way to the church itself.
The church has beautiful stained glass windows commissioned by the weathly merchant families who came for the summer season in the 1800s, some making it their permenant home. There are many names that you will recognised buried in the graveyard of the church. The church also has one of the last working water powered organs and it is used regularly. It is still an active church and with that in mind we are sometimes closed to allow funerals, weddings and christenings to take place.
The mausoleum is now fully restored and will be part of the tour when we open again on the 4th April 2015.
There is a very rich and exciting history on this site which has seen massacres, possible grave robbings as well as burials of a be-headed earl. Queen Victorias daughter has left a wonerful sculpture which can be found in the Visitors Centre along with many other artifacts. If you come and join us for a tour or if you would rather explore on your own we can guarantee that you will not be disappointed.
