Originally a traditional tin roofed 'But n' Ben', Barracks Cottage remains charming, couthy and steeped in the historical shadow of the 18th century Bernera Barracks - built circa 1723. The cottage is detached and enjoys a secluded, tranquil location at the end of a private track. It is bestowed with exceptional, uninterrupted and panoramic views across the Sound of Sleat to the Isle of Skye.
Barracks Cottage is uniquely positioned in a third acre site (safe for children and pets) yet it is only a 3 minute walk to the local shop and a further 40 seconds to the village inn! Smouldering images of the Isle of Skye's Cullins are in view and the remote wilderness of Knoydart's peninsula lies further to the south. Few other destinations offer such a thrilling final 8 miles! To arrive at Barracks Cottage you drive over Mam Ratagan which, at 1,100+ feet, is one of the highest mountain passes in the UK.
Surrounded by the natural beauty of the west highland coast, the area offers a host of activities and unforgettable sights. There is close proximity to some of the best walking, trekking and mountaineering available with many wonderful low level and coastal walks on the doorstep. The stunning mountain and coastal landscape is home to a diverse wildlife: seals, porpoises, dolphins, whales and basking sharks live, pass through and pepper the surrounding waters. Otters, sea eagles, herons, cross-bills, barn owls, deer and much more can be spotted above and below; flying, perching, scampering, nestling and sharing their investment in this wonderful scenery.
Choose locally to walk, cycle, drive or swim; beach comb, explore, study, paint or collect. Within a number of miles you can horse ride or bag some Munros. Boat trips can be arranged at Kyle and there is golf, kayak tuition, distillery tours, home farms, Eilean Donan castle and much more. Between April and October don't forget to use the last and exclusive turn table ferry in Europe (now owned by the Glenelg community) and a very special way to start any visit to Skye - crossing at Kylerhea. Above all - relax and enjoy!!
