Between the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains, this roadside inn has been owned by brothers Charles and Edmund Inkin, whose childhood home is nearby, for 14 years. It is here that they created the relaxed style ('a modern version of a traditional inn,' they say) that is much liked by Guide readers.
There are books and a Roberts radio (not a television) in the bedrooms; mobile phone signals are restricted, though satellite broadband is being installed for those who insist on them. There are leather sofas, wooden floors, open fires, wooden tables and chairs in the linked rooms in the bar and dining areas. Dogs are welcomed 'as much as their owners', and are allowed to sit under the table in the tack room.
Head gardener Joe Hand provides vegetables, fresh fruit and rhubarb from the kitchen garden in the grounds for the menus of chef Max Wilson. Typical dishes: cured salmon, pea and broad bean Caesar salad; shin of Welsh beef, cèpe risotto, asparagus and wet garlic. The brothers run The Gurnard's Head, Zennor, and The Old Coastguard, Mousehole, in similar style.
