We aim to utilize the facilities here at Pigeon Key as an open campus for delivering education to the public about the historical, environmental, and cultural significance of the Florida Keys.
Nestled in the heart of the Florida Keys, the island of Pigeon Key is the single most historically significant location in the island chain. In the early 1900s, the island housed approximately 400 workers who built the Overseas Railway, the rail road that connected the southern tip of mainland Florida all the way to Key West. The brainchild of Henry Flagler, an entrepreneur and self-made millionaire, the project was originally deemed the folly of an old man. Today the bridge still stands as a testament to the engineering and human willpower of the time.
Today, you can follow the footsteps of the original workers as you board the Ferry in Knights Key for a trip out to Pigeon Key. Learn what it took to be a railway worker in the early 1900s, as well as the fascinating history of this tiny 5-acre island, which has seen many changes since the railway days. After your tour take a swim off the Pigeon Key dock** or bring your own picnic to enjoy for lunch!

**No lifeguard present. Please bring your own snorkeling/swimming equipment.
