The Maui Historical Society was founded in 1951 through community-based efforts and is a non-profit organization dedicated to the collection, preservation, study, and perpetuation of Maui's history and heritage. The Society maintains and operates Hale Ho`ike`ike "House of Knowledge" also known as Bailey House Museum at the mouth of `Iao Valley in an area historically the home site of Maui's Hawaiian royalty. The museum's buildings were built in 1833 and originally used a the site of a female seminary school for Hawaiian girls lead by Protestant missionaries.

Our museum has the largest collection of pre-contact Hawaiian artifacts and historical pictures on Maui and we have an extensive collection of documents, including maps, government records, Hawaiian-language newspapers, genealogies, oral histories, and over 10,000 historical photographs. We host over 12,000 visitors per year from Maui and around the world. We are listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. Throughout the year, we present a myriad of workshops, programs, concerts, and other community events.

We welcome everyone to our museum with warmth and hospitality and invite you to visit our museum, learn about our history and heritage, and take a step back in time. It is an educational and fun experience for the whole family.
