Between March 14, 1863 until July 9, 1863 approximately 6,500 Confederate soldiers held off approximately 30,000 Union soldiers and sailors in the longest true siege in American military history. Additionally, two regiments, approximately 2,000 black Americans, either former slaves or freed persons of color became the first African-American Union troops to be utilized as an attacking force during a major assault during the American Civil War. The park has an American Civil War museum, civil war period artillery displays, and approximately six miles of hiking trails that cover the northern half of the Port Hudson battlefield. Most tours of the battlefield area are self-guided, but for those who reserve a tour at least one week in advance may be eligible for a guided tour.
