Street / Art, Lower East Side
Discover how the chaos of the Lower East Side has shaped—and continues to shape—the destiny of the art world. There’s an incredible amount of street art in New York City whether Banksy (English) or Invader (French) have “residencies” here or not. See and learn who and what inspired today’s fascinating mix of paste-ups, stencils, memorials, tags and throws. Get the context behind last year's Banksy street art blitz right here in the streets where hip hop and graffiti began. Besides the latest street art, we explore earlier art in and about the streets by talking early photography and painting, and hearing relevant music along the way. We’ll visit a handful of art galleries to see the art world trends, and compare them to street art techniques along the route. Around us, historic tenements mix with bold architectural innovation in this eclectic neighborhood. We’ll end in the heart of the Lower East Side near one of NYC's most famous street art sites. Even if you’ve just recently absorbed the Downtown art vibe, it’s constantly evolving. No tour is ever the same.
Street / Art, Gowanus
Art in the streets of gray industrial neighborhoods might seem scarce, but it’s become a rule here in Brooklyn’s largest arts community. In an area filled with signs of old industrial might, current creative industries are everywhere. And so are artists. We stop by alternative artist-run galleries and libraries and peek into art studios as we criss-cross the infamous Gowanus Canal. The stock of architecture is stunning, especially when paired with a wide range of community murals and street art. Details about this polluted Superfund site and its quirky infrastructure fill in the tour, but the meat of this walk is art. Art is in the engineering and architecture, and it’s in and on the buildings too. We venture inside and outside, finding everything from antiques to oil paintings and oddball art installations. Meet the faces of Gowanus—both new and old—and hear stories from the lips of the lively inhabitants that live and work on the banks of the “Lavendar Lake.”
