Four Presidents Have Visited Linden Place Mansion. Now it’s Your Turn! With tours and activities for all ages, Linden Place offers a fun and educational experience for the whole family.
Built in 1810 by General George DeWolf in the Federal style, Linden Place is the ‘architectural crown jewel of Bristol’s downtown waterfront district. Visitors marvel at its four-story spiral staircase which has few rivals in America and see pictures of the filming of The Great Gatsby with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow in which Linden Place was featured.
Tour highlights include tales of DeWolf family exploits, from their privateering and slave trading to their financial ruin and triumphant return to prosperity during Victorian times. Visitors will “meet” family members Pomeroy Colt, founder of United States Rubber (now Uniroyal), his mother Theodora DeWolf Colt, who, as Madam Colt, ran Bristol Society from Linden Place, and the great actress Ethel Barrymore, who married in to this prominent family. Visitors are also welcome to stroll through the sculpture-filled gardens where they will find Greek bronzes and an 18th Century gazebo and visit the newly opened Bristol Art Museum (Thursday through Sunday)
For younger visitors there is a scavenger hunt which provides the opportunity to see this historic house museum in a whole new light! Participants will make their way through the 200-year-old mansion rooms and seek out dozens of artifacts, big and small, hidden and in plain sight, while learning of Linden Place's rich architectural and social history.
Guided and self-guided tours of the estate will be given Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., Sundays from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m., and by appointment.
