Every year, over 90,000 people come from all over the world to learn about the Pleistocene (Late Ice Age), as well as seeing a working paleontological dig site where, to date, 58 Columbian and 3 woolly mammoths have been unearthed.

The Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, SD is the largest in-situ museum in the United States. In-Situ means that when bones are discovered in the bonebed they are not removed, but left in their original, natural position. Specimens are only removed from the bonebed if the bone is in jeopardy of being damaged or to explore the area beneath it. This allows our visitors and visiting scientists a truly unique and wonderful learning experience.
