Author Bill Bryson stopped here and mentioned the visit in his best-selling book, A Walk in the Woods. The 10-foot 3-D map of the East Coast he mentions is among the exhibits that showcase the scope and beauty of America's most famous hiking path. A friendly staff of employees and volunteers will answer your questions and help you make the most of your visit to the area. A wide variety of books, DVDs, maps and souvenirs are available for purchase. A junior ranger booklet helps not only kids but adults learn about this national treasure of the A.T., and a patch or rocker is available to those who complete it.
From May through October, you may meet "thru-hikers" who are stopping by at the "psychological halfway point" to get their picture taken a thousand miles into their journey.
The visitor center is also adjacent to the grounds of the historical Storer College Campus, the first institution of higher learning in the U.S. open to all Americans. Storer Collge is sometimes referred to as the birthplace of Civil Rights. The path leading from the visitor center to the Appalachian Trail passes right through this often overlooked site.
