Storm expected Christmas eve

No less than 7 weather warnings have been issued for Christmas Eve. There are 4 Amber warnings and 3 Yellow warnings, covering most of the UK.

In the very early hours of the morning South Wales and the south of England will be affected by more heavy rainfall. This could be particularly heavy and persistent rain, and the Met office have issued an amber alert because of the further risk of local flooding it brings. This alert is valid from 11.45pm on the 23rd, until 6am Christmas Eve.

Also early in the morning, Southwesterly gales and locally severe gales will continue across eastern parts of England and strengthen further in the South East. Gusts of 65 - 75mph are expected even inland in the south east, and up to 85mph on the coast. This Amber warning is in place from Midnight until 6am on Christmas eve morning. These will be particularly strong winds so the public should be aware of potential disruptions travel and power supplies.

From 3am on Christmas eve morning, Northern Ireland will be the subject of an Amber weather warning of wind. Gusts of 60-70 mph are expected inland with 80 mph gusts possible along the North coast and over high ground. Along with the wind there is likely to be showers of sleet or snow. This weather warning is in place until 2pm Christmas Eve. The public should be aware of potential disruptions travel and power supplies.

The final Amber alert is for Western Scotland. The deepening depression will bring a period of storm force winds with gusts 80 to 90 mph later on Tuesday, to affect western Scotland and then into the Northern Isles. Severe gales will continue into Christmas Day across the far north and the Northern Isles. The public should be aware of potential disruptions travel and power supplies.

There are also 3 yellow weather warnings... One for heavy rain expected to affect southern England in the early hours of the morning, Another for wind affecting Northern Ireland, Scotland, north Wales and northern England during for the whole day. This is likely to bring gusts up to 85mph. And finally a yellow weather warning of ice, affecting Scotland 3am until 9am.

It's going to be a rough day weather wise for most of the country on Christmas Eve and there is real potential for flooding, travel disruptions and power supply problems.
