Thick fog over Southern parts of England has caused travel disruptions.

Thick fog over Southern parts of England has caused travel disruptions.

Many parts of England have seen a thick layer of fog today, causing hundreds of cancelled and delayed flights at airports in the South East.

Heathrow, where the fog has now lifted suffered at least 130 cancellations and many passengers continue to face delays. London City airport has cancelled all flights today so far and still remains shrouded in fog. At Southampton Airport all flights have resumed but 16 flights were cancelled this morning.

The fog England has suffered in the last 48 hours is called Radiation fog. This is caused by a high pressure system, damp ground, a clear sky and very calm winds. If winds are light, moisture evaporating from the surface will remain near the surface and not mix with drier air above. Provided a deep enough layer of moist air is present near the ground, fog will form.

As we head into Wednesday evening, the fog has lifted for most of the country, but as temperatures drop tonight heavy fog is likely to return to London, the South East and East Anglia making driving conditions in some areas quite difficult.

Tomorrow morning there may be patchy fog around in the very early hours, but as the breeze picks up, any fog still around will quickly turn to low cloud.
