UK Flooding - Major Incident Declared Storm Desmond Hits The UK

A Major incident has been declared, as Storm Desmond brings severe flooding to Cumbria. The Met office have issued a rare Red weather warning of rain for parts of Cumbria, and the Environment agency has issued has issued 31 severe flood warnings, meaning that there is imminent danger to life.

Flooding has already affected many properties, forcing residents to evacuate. In some cases, residents have refused to leave their homes, go upstairs instead. Th eimage below, recently posted on Twitter, show an arm chair floating down the road, in the Cumbrian town of Appleby.

A chief forecaster at the Met office has warned of more rain to come in the next few hours, further increasing the flood risk in the the North west of England, and South West of Scotland...

A slow-moving frontal system is bringing a prolonged spell of heavy rain and strong winds. For the rest of Saturday and the early hours of Sunday further rainfall totals in excess of 150 mm are expected locally over some prone mountainous areas in Cumbria whilst parts of the Borders can locally expect in excess of 60 mm rain. Given saturated conditions and high river levels from recent rainfall, further flooding is expected.
