For many areas the first day of the year brings persistent rain and further flooding. As the evening progresses, the number of flood warnings issued by the Environment agency grows. There are currently 55 flood warnings (Flooding is expected. Immediate action required) and 240 flood alerts (Flooding is possible. Be prepared) in force.
Latest 2nd Jan: Flooding continued into Tuesday as water levels increased further on the river Mole and River Wey in Sussex and Surrey. Earlier today we reported on further flooding in Guildford, Leatherhead and Godalming.
Another storm is expected to move over the UK from tomorrow morning bringing more rain and winds, and further increasing the risk of flooding. A tidal surge caused by a spring tide, high winds and a low pressure weather system will bring risk of severe coastal flooding in Wales, south west England and south east England. Read more.

At 20:59 another flood warning has been issued for the River Wye, this time from Hereford To Ross On Wye, again with water levels expected to peak tomorrow morning.

Flood warnings have increased to 53, two flood warnings for the South East have recently been issued for Landford, Wellow Mill, and Wade Bridge, on the River Blackwater, and Langbridge and Alverstone on the Eastern Yar. Heavy rain continues to fall in many parts of the country.
Maidstone (Kent) Council are warning of potential flooding in Yalding. They say that sandbags are available from Benover Road, with More sandbags to follow later at Lyngs close.
Earlier today, Leatherhead football club was evacuated by police. We are not sure if this was due to flood risk, but after severe flooding in Leatherhead last week, it's likely it was done as a precaution. There is a flood alert in force for the River Mole and its tributaries from Kinnersley Manor to South Hersham, including Sidlow, Leigh, Betchworth, Brockham, Pixham, Dorking, Mickleham, Leatherhead, Fetcham, Stoke D'Abernon and Cobham.
River levels continue to rise, will update this page through the evening as more floods are reported.

As the day has progressed, more and more reports of surface flooding and river levels becoming dangerously high have emerged.
This afternoon a picture was posted on Twitter of flooding in the car park of the local Co-op at Borough Green in Kent, sand bangs can be seen at the entrance, defending the shop from the flood water.
