Weather warnings for the UK on Friday 14th February.

Once again a storm is going to move north-eastwards across the country on Friday evening (14th February 2014) bringing more severe gales and heavy rain. This time the storm will move the north of the UK in the early evening, and it will be the winds on the southern flank of the storm that brings the biggest impact. South West England, South East England, London and East Anglia will see severe gales with gusts of 60 - 70mph widely, and 80 - 90mph on the coast.

There is an Amber severe weather warning of wind for South West England, South East England, London and East Anglia for 6pm on Friday, until 10am Saturday. The Met office warn that with the winds, large waves can be expected on the south coast, and where it coincides with high tide, coastal flooding is possible.  A Yellow severe weather warning of wind is in force for Wales and East Midland, where gusts are likely to reach 60 - 70mph locally.

This storm is sadly also going to bring further heavy rain to the south of England and Wales, further intensifying the situation in flooded areas.  The south west of England is the subject of an Amber warning of rain, where 15 - 25 mm of rain is expected widely, and up to 40 mm in some areas. The rest of the south of England, Midlands, South Wales and Northern Ireland are the subject of a Yellow warning of rain.

The public should be aware of potential for disruption to travel and power, and the possibility of property damage. Travel on Friday evening and night in the south of England should be avoided if possible.

Many southern coastal areas have experienced huge waves and significant flooding during the storm tonight.

32 people have been rescued from a beach front restaurant at Milford on Sea, HM coastguard report...

Lymington Coastguard Rescue Team worked alongside Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and the Army to rescue 32 people from a beach front restaurant at Milford on Sea. The alarm was raised at 10pm yesterday when sea flooded the Marine Restaurant and the wind picked up the shingle from the beach and smashed the ground floor windows.

The restaurant customers and staff moved upstairs while waiting to be rescued. They were evacuated in an Army vehicle. Conditions were described as extremely dangerous.

Update 00:30: A woman has lost her life after part of a building collapsed onto her car in Holborn.

Update 22:59: Many power failures reported in the south or England. Here in Horsham, West Sussex lights are flickering regularly.

Many reports of fallen trees all over the south of England, and for the south East, the worst is yet to come. Winds are expected to peak between midnight and 3pm.

A passenger's died and another's been airlifted to shore after a cruise ship was hit by a huge wave in the English Channel. The wave hit the Marco Polo cruise ship, operated by Cruise and Maritime Voyages (CMV) as it headed for its home port of Tilbury in Essex at the end of a 42-night voyage.

Some flight to Gatwick and Heathrow have had to be diverted due to severe gales.

Update 21:40: There has been severe coastal flooding tonight as high tides and severe gale force winds batter the south coast.

In Newlyn, Cornwall, a video captured today shows just how dangerous it is to get close to the sea in these conditons.

More trees are falling as winds become stronger in the South East.

Update 18:25: Lots of reports of fallen trees are coming in. This tree has fallen on a car in the car park of a hospital in Truro.

Update 18:20: The storm begins to bring travel disruption on rail networks.

Update 17:40: Reports of fallen trees, property damage and power disruption have started to come in as the storm arrives in South West England.
