A new low pressure system is expected to bring sever gale force winds to much of the UK on the 23rd and Christmas Eve

Important: The storm has started. We are now providing regular updates on our 'Storm, as it happens' page.

Much of the UK has been affected by a succession of storms cause by low pressure weather systems moving across the Atlantic on a strong Jet Stream.

Just as parts of the country are beginning to repair damage caused by the Wednesday's storm, much of the country needs to be aware of yet another storm due to hit the UK on the 23rd of December, into Christmas eve.

The new low pressure system will cause a storm of high winds and rain, and will reach our shores in the early hours of Monday the 23rd December. The Met Office has issued a Yellow weather warning of wind and rain which is in affect from 6am on the 23rd until mid day on Christmas eve.

The new storm will affect more regions than recent storms have, with the whole of Scotland, Northern Ireland, North west coastal areas , Wales coastal areas, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire, Hampshire, Sussex, Kent, Surrey and London, all expected to be affected.

There is potential for gusts of up to 70mph widely, and 80 - 90mph possible particularly in West Scotland. This storm could bring damage to trees and property, and cause significant disruption to travel.

With the ground saturated by recent heavy rain, there is also significant risk of local flooding.

This low pressure system has developed very rapidly so there is uncertainty as to the depth and track of the storm. We will update this page regularly as more information becomes available.
