Most people in the UK will have heard by now that just as we start to recover from the floods and power cuts caused by the major storm on the 23rd and 24th of December, yet another low pressure weather system will bring even more stormy weather to the UK.
The storm we have just been through has caused severe disruption to the UK, with power cuts, flooding and travel disruptions that have made it impossible to get home for Christmas being the biggest problems. The thought of another storm just few days later is bringing further worry.
The good news is, the coming storm is not currently looking to be as severe as the previous storm and areas affected, less widespread. The low will arrive late on Boxing day with the worst of the winds expected to be in the South West of England, Wales, The North East and Southern and Eastern Scotland on Friday the 27th. There is a Yellow weather warning of wind for these regions. Winds are expected to reach up to 60mph.
Update: An amber weather warning of wind has been issued for North East England, North West England, Wales, Yorkshire & Humber. Gales are likely to develop late on Boxing day, into Friday the 27th. Gusts of 60 to 70 mph widely with locally 80 mph gusts affecting west coasts and high ground for a time. People in these areas should prepare for disruption to transport and possible loss of power supply.
There is also an Yellow warning of rain for Wales, Northern Ireland and southern England, with 10 to 20mm expected to fall widely and 30mm possible over parts of Wales.
Up to 40mm of rain are expected locally over Scotland and northern England, but currently the yellow weather warning does not cover these areas.
Many areas in the south of England suffered flooding on Monday 23rd and Tuesday the 24th, so the rain that this new storm brings could bring further flooding to those areas. Although the rain is unlikely to be quite as severe as earlier in the week, very saturated ground and already very high water levels mean that more flooding is possible.
