UK Storm Live As It Happens - 5th December - Severe Flooding To Come

Early yesterday Scotland, North England, The Midlands, North Wales and East Anglia suffered damaging winds, causing damage, loss of life and severe travel disruptions. Later, a Storm Surge caused by a low pressure system, high winds and a natural high tide, caused severe tidal flooding in North Wales and the East Coast of England.

A little while ago the BBC released a video on Youtube of the flooding and aftermath. Boston was one of the worst affected areas in last nights floods.

The clean up has begun in areas affected by the flood. Our thoughts go out to all those who have suffered damage to their homes and property, and to all those who are working tirelessly to help with the clean up.

Police have issues public health advice to those affected by flooding:

  • If you’re caught in a flood, do not consume food that has been contaminated by flood waters.
  • Do not let young children play in flood water and try to avoid coming into contact with flood water.
  • If you do come in contact with flood water, wash hands using clean water and soap and be aware of young children putting their hands in their mouth. Washing hands is the best way to get rid of bugs.
  • Keep in touch with elderly and vulnerable friends, family and neighbours in affected areas, ask about their welfare and offer assistance when possible.

As Thursday 5th of December comes to an end, we have seen dramatic scenes of high winds, fallen tress and damaged properties in Scotland, severe flooding to Rhyl, Wales, and very severe flooding on the East coast of England from Newcastle to Felixstowe.

Sadly it is not over, Essex and Kent are yet to feel the effects of the Storm surge. Thousands of people have been evacuated and only time will tell how extensive the damage will be.

The Environment Agency still has 64 active Severe flood warnings going into Friday.

Many parts of Coastal Essex evacuated or preparing to Evacuate.

Reports of water levels dropping in Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft. The flood damage is likely to be very extensive.

200 homes in Sandwich, Kent have been evacuated. Floods expected to hit Kent in around 2 hours. Other areas in danger of flooding include Medway, Gravesend, Seasalter and Faversham.

70 homes in Seasalter and 200 in Faversham, Kent are being evacuated ahead of expected flooding in the early hours of tomorrow.

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed soldiers have been sent to help with flooding in Norfolk.

The river Humber in Hull has burst it's bank affecting many properties. Police are advising people to leave their houses urgently.

Flooding has now started in Great Yarmouth.

A Severe flood warning has now been issued covering 18,000 people in Boston. Police advise people to head to a local sports stadium. Anyone else is advised to head to upstairs bedrooms, either in their own home or a neighbour's.

Great Yarmouth in Norfolk and Lowestoft in Suffolk are preparing for flooding. With over 2 hours still to go until hight tide and water already 2 metres above normal high tide levels, it could be a very severe flood.

35,000 properties in the North East, Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire are still without power after today's winds.

Ed Miliband Tweets that his thoughts are with victims of the storms and the thousands being evacuated from their homes today.

As people travel home from work the are a number of disruptions on the Motorway networks...

  • The M6 southbound between junctions J16 and J15, there are currently severe delays due to an earlier multi-vehicle accident between J15 and J14. Please consider an alternative route.
  • The M62 eastbound is closed between junctions J36 and J37, due to an incident. Road expected to re-open from 6:00 pm.
  • The M62 westbound is closed between junctions J37 and J36, due to an incident. Road expected to re-open from 6:00 pm.
  • The M66 northbound is closed between junction J1 and the A56, due to an overturned vehicle. Road expected to re-open from 6:15 pm.

Rhyl, Wales has been hit by severe flooding. Around people have been evacuated from their homes to Rhyl leisure centre.

Homes in Flintshire have been warned to evacuate as flood warnings increase to severe.

News emerges that a man has died after being hit by a falling tree whilst on his mobility scooter in King's Park, Retford, Nottinghamshire at around 1.50pm.

Youtube user David Goodship posts video of Emirates plane as it missed the approach at Birmingham Airport.

After missing a second attempt to land the pilot was forced to divert to Gatwick airport.
